I saw a baby humming bird dived upon by a snake
i ran outside
i held it in my hands
i held in my small hands all that it contained
yet it was much more than it was
i felt its
dying heart beats
dying breaths
dying wing beats
oh speckled green diamond
splashed with red
you and your brothers
tell me how
how does your small quivering mass contain
all of you
so many heart beats
so many wing beats
so many breathes
how could you contain or cope
whose fault was it you were to die
that you wandered into the lion's den
oh sparkling emerald sun wreathed in red
truly oh truly
though life be short
truly
you
have lived.
