Why did Jesus Make the Hummingbird?
by Anna Binkley, age 9
(Winter Garden, Florida)
"Why did Jesus make the hummingbird?" asked a girl to her mother.
"Well I don't know", replied the girl's mother.
"Because Jesus created the hummingbird with fast, tiny wings that make them fly, so they must be useful", said the girl.
Her mother replied, "But I still don't know why Jesus made the small hummingbird. Have you ever seen one before?"
"Why, no, but I wish to see one soon", exclaimed the girl to her mother. "Can we make one come to us?"
Her mother thought a while and then said, "Maybe we can plant a garden, and then we might see a hummingbird." So the girl and her mother planted flower after flower and seed after seed. They decided to put a birdbath in the center to interest the hummingbirds, too, and finally their garden was finished.
As they went back inside the girl asked again to her mother, "So, why did Jesus make the hummingbird, Mama?"
Her mother sat down to a glass of juice and said in surprise, "Oh look, there is a hummingbird in our garden!" The little girl ran up to the window and saw the beautiful little hummingbird drinking from the gorgeous, red and sweet flower.
She asked again, "Mother, will you please tell me why Jesus made the hummingbird?"
The girl's mother said to her daughter, "Sweetie, I don't know." She looked at the beautiful hummingbird in the garden and all of a sudden she thought she knew why. "Well maybe Jesus made the beautiful, fascinating hummingbird just because."
"Because why?" asked the daughter.
"It is beautiful", said the mother. "Maybe Jesus made the hummingbird just because it's beautiful. And maybe so we could have these conversations and we could see the wonders He and His father made."
As the two sat looking out the window, they did see the wonders God had made.
